2007 Tundra Overview
In 2007 Toyota introduced an all-new edition of the Toyota Tundra full-size pickup truck. Bigger, more powerful and more rugged than any other edition of the Toyota Tundra to have come before it, the 2007 model finally put all the pieces together to create a formula that was competitive with the domestic full-size trucks that had dominated the market up to that time.
The 2007 Toyota Tundra offers big-rig styling that is in line with the designs provided by the other major players in the full-size truck market. It also provides three different body styles, including a Regular Cab edition that seats three passengers along with two five or six passenger models: the Double Cab and CrewMax editions. The latter two offer an additional set of doors to facilitate easier access to the passenger compartment, with the CrewMax providing full-size rear doors and an additional degree of interior space thanks to a stretched passenger compartment. This longer design restricts the CrewMax edition of the 2007 Toyota Tundra to a 5.5-foot cargo bed, while the Double Cab and Regular Cab are each available with either a 6.5-foot bed or an 8-foot long bed.
Trim Levels
The base DX trim on the 2007 Toyota Tundra is only found on Regular Cab versions of the pickup. Intended to offer a level of equipment that is appropriate to a basic work truck, DX models offer a cloth bench seats, dual zone climate control, a CD player featuring an auxiliary input and 18-inch steel wheels.
For 2007, both the Double Cab and the CrewMax start out at the SR5 trim level. The core of the SR5 trim is built around an upgraded stereo system with a six-CD changer, power windows and door locks, and heating ducts for rear passengers. On the outside, the truck gains chrome bumpers front and rear, while a center and overhead console along with carpeting for the floors dresses up the inside.
There are two variations of the SR5 trim that come into play when ordering specific versions of the Toyota Tundra. If matched with an eight-foot box, the SR5 trim also includes a towing package for the truck (additional cooling, a tow/haul setting for the vehicle's automatic transmission and special, extendable mirrors). If ordered in a CrewMax model, then the SR5 trim offers the additional luxury of a reclining rear seat, a sliding back window, rear air conditioning ducts, heated side mirrors and a defrost feature for the rear glass.
The top of the line Limited trim provides the most comprehensive range of comfort items to be found in the 2007 Toyota Tundra. Inside, leather seats replace cloth upholstery, front seats are upgraded to captain's chairs (including 10-way power adjustment for the driver) and a telescoping steering wheel is installed. Other amenities to be found in the passenger compartment of the Tundra Limited include automatic climate control, Bluetooth connectivity and an even more powerful stereo system. The exterior of the Limited is provided with alloy wheels to replace the stock steel rims, power-retractable auto-dimming side-mirrors and a set of bed rails featuring tie-downs to help manage cargo more efficiently.
Several different stand-alone options and packages were available with the 2007 Toyota Tundra. One of the most popular was the TRD Off-Road package, which grafted a trail-ready Bilstein suspension underneath the truck and also added fog lights, unique 20-inch wheels and knobby all-terrain tires. A skid plate and a front tow hook completed the TRD group of features. Also available on the Tundra were a backup camera, 20-inch alloy wheels, a navigation system, monochromatic exterior trim (Regular and Double Cab body styles) and a sunroof for CrewMax editions of the truck.
Powertrain Options
Under the hood, all entry-level Regular Cab and Double Cab editions of the 2007 Toyota Tundra are equipped with a 265 horsepower, 4.0-liter V6 engine that is also capable of generating 266 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission is the only available gearbox for this unit, and fuel mileage is rated at 15 miles per gallon in city driving and 19 miles per gallon on the highway. The maximum tow rating for this engine hovers around the 5,000 lbs mark.
Stepping up to the available 4.7-liter V8 for these two body styles adds 271 horsepower and 313 lb-ft of torque to the mix, along with the option of four-wheel drive. Fuel mileage drops somewhat to 14 miles per gallon around town and 18 miles per gallon on the highway, and the vehicle's transmission remains a five-speed auto. This eight-cylinder motor is standard on the Double Cab long bed as well as the CrewMax, and the max towing capacity associated with this engine jumps to 8,500 lbs.
Optional on the Regular Cab, Double Cab and CrewMax editions of the Tundra is a 5.7-liter V8 that makes use of VVT-i variable valve timing in order to squeeze out an impressive 381 horsepower and 401 lb-ft of torque. Despite its hefty output, the 5.7-liter features efficient engine management that allows it to provide a reported 14 miles per gallon in city driving and 17-miles per gallon on the highway. A six-speed automatic transmission steps in to handle the shifting duties, and the additional grunt offered by this large V8 increases the Tundra's towing capacity to as much as 10,400 lbs.
