GM has released the details on its new 2015 GMC Canyon. Is this truck strong enough to change up the mid-size truck market? Nope, but it does have some features that every truck buyer will appreciate.

The new 2015 GMC Canyon extended cab.

On the Saturday before the North American International Auto Show, GM revealed the truck through a press release hoping to get a jump on the media coverage. The Chevrolet Colorado twin is set to share the same engine and cab configurations.

The interior is a big upgrade over the previous model.

Like the Colorado, the Canyon will be offered in an extended cab, crew cab with 5 foot bed and a crew cab with a 6 foot bed. The line is that when you drop the tailgate on the 6 foot bed, it will hold items 8 feet long. There will not be a regular cab, instead GM is sticking with its plan to offer a “rear-seat delete” option at the dealership.

The rear profile of the Canyon matches the full-size models quite a bit.

Powering the truck will be the same four cylinder and V-6 engines with a diesel offering coming later. GM says the truck has many “segment best” features like:

  • Segment-first CornerStep rear bumper design, pioneered on the 2014 Sierra, is standard
  • Available segment-first EZ Lift-and-Lower locking tailgate that uses an internal torsion bar to make raising the tailgate easier with one hand, and a damper for more-controlled lowering
  • The segment’s best horsepower – an estimated 193 horsepower (146 kW) from a standard 2.5L I-4 and an estimated 302 horsepower (224 kW) from an available 3.6L V-6
  • The segment’s best payload of at least 1,450 pounds (657 kg)
  • The segment’s best maximum trailering rating (when properly equipped) of at least 6,700 pounds (3,039 kg)
  • Even greater capability with a powerful and efficient Duramax 2.8L turbodiesel engine coming in 2016
  • Standard two-tier loading that allows a platform to effectively split the bed into upper and lower sections, making it easier to haul, store and conceal items such as tools
  • Thirteen reconfigurable and four stationary tie-down locations throughout the bed for use with available, removable cargo tie-down rings
  • Standard bed rail and tailgate protectors
  • Available factory-installed spray-in bed liner
  • Range of 16-, 17- and 18-inch aluminum wheels

The crew cab Canyon sure looks a lot like the Sierra.

While, I’ll let you read my other article, there are several features though that I would like to see on the Toyota Tundra. My list includes: a Turbodiesel, the longer bed configuration, the rear locking differential option, AutoTrac auto 4WD, the new “teen” driver software option (if you have kids, you would understand) and the CornerStep (it is nice) feature.

What’s on your list? Any of these items grab your attention.

  1. Rick says:

If it comes with the diesel, all bets are off. It’ll dominate the segment.

    • Eric says:

      I strongly agree!

    • I’m not trying to be argumentative, but there are lots of diesels in car segments that aren’t exactly setting the world on fire.

Truck owners are a different breed, and I’m sure that a lot of them will be interested, but the cost-benefit analysis of diesel is cloudy. I can see a lot of people deciding to stick with a gas motor when they see the sticker price of the diesel…

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but there are some good reasons to wonder if the diesel option will faceplant. 🙂

      • Larry says:

Depends on what diesel it might be and with a 25 percent tax penalty on diesel there is no advantage with regard to fuel cost.

2.5 L in-line 4 cylinder????? I wonder how many of those will be sold? Remember how fast Toyota ran away from the 4 cylinder T100.

As for tailgates, I have opened and closed them thousands of times. Never occurred to me that they needed improvement. Must be something more important they could work on.

  2. Mike T says:

Other unique features for the 2015 Canyon include an EZ Lift-and-Lower tailgate with an internal torsion bar to damp and ease tailgate lowering and lifting.
A CornerStep rear bumper design first seen on the 2014 GMC Sierra.

  3. Mickey says:

Not a bad looking truck. The pics to me look to be a full size truck.

  4. gerry says:

diesels are for heavy work trucks that haul stuff. 90% of truck owners don’t need a diesel

  5. gerry says:

    nice looking thow

  6. GoBig says:

It seems to have stolen its styling cues directly from Toyota. The rear and sides look strikingly similar to a Tundra.

Even the grille isn’t that far off.

  7. Will says:

The success of the Canyon will depend on many factors, but of particular importance may be customers’ satisfaction with the overall appearance and price.
If it’s too outrageously expensive, the likely option may still be a full size truck. Quite honestly, GMC will also have to work diligently on a threefold front to gain segment loyalty and brand loyalty, while reinventing the Canyon name to distinguish it from the previous generation.
