Honda Plans All New Ridgeline – Big Deal?

Honda announced this week that they really are going to build an all-new Ridgeline. Really!

Honda Plans All New Ridgeline - Big Deal?

This silhouette is all we have on the new Honda Ridgeline.

Details are pretty scarce on this news and Honda has only revealed a photo and a plan to debut the model in two years. They are also going to stop producing the current model in mid-2014. This leads us to believe that there could be some time when Honda will not have a truck to offer.

While Honda’s foray into trucks has been a bit of a hit or miss (depends on who you ask), we would characterize it as a miss. For the 2013 model year, it has sold 16,160 vehicles and while that is a 29 percent increase for Honda, it is about the monthly sales of nearly everyone’s pickup lineup and then some. However, for Honda, it is might be just what they were hoping to achieve. Who knows.

The Honda Ridgeline has been a bit of a mystery ever since its introduction. Is it a fullsize, midsize or a crossover type vehicle? It has the size of a fullsize, but it surely doesn’t have the characteristics of one.

Honda could decide to really get serious about the fullsize truck and the first-gen Ridgeline could follow the same timeline of Toyota truck heritage (T-100 to 2nd gen).

Until new details come out, it is all really just speculation at this time.

What do you think Honda needs to do to be more competitive?

    The Ridgeline is a truck?

      Hi Tonyspin!

Funny, I think I only see you commenting when I talk about the Honda. Personal hatred?? 🙂

      • Tonyspin says:

No hatred here. I had a 94 Accord. Great car, put 200k on it.

        • Tim Esterdahl says:

Just wondering. Seems like whenever I post about the Honda Ridgeline, you are always right there with a “it isn’t a truck” comment. For us, if Honda is going to market it as one, we will report it as one.

Looks like a truck, may be as per the drawing, its a Truck..

  2. ALVARO says:

Real pick-up are body on frame, so Ridgeline is not a real truck for me.

  3. Randy says:

There is no telling what Honda is up to? If it is like the current Ridgeline, then I consider it a fail. I do not remember “anyone” asking for an Accord with a bucket on the back? Why not just open the lid on the Accord and you have the same thing?

If it is a full size truck, then Honda is the “one” company that could finally offer competition to Tundra. They are the “one” company that can match and perhaps pass Tundra on QDR – maybe?

If it is a compact truck, the silhouette does not suggest competition to Tacoma? But as a compact truck it could become serious competition to the new GM products – the ones that have zero QDR – which I already consider a fail before they are on the market. Sorry my mind is made up.

I will say the silhouette does look nice, sort of like a super-refined Tundra. Um? What does everyone else think?

Now if it is full size without a frame, then it will not be on my radar.

    • Tim Esterdahl says:

      Randy,

My only thought is will Honda keep the same “type” of truck or really redo it similar to the T-100 and then 2nd Gen? I think they go 2nd Gen route myself.

Also, I don’t think it will be compact based on the size of the photo.

We may not think it’s a truck but Honda list it as one. So be it. I don’t have an issue with it. If those who like it then great for them. I’m just not one of them. This will be interesting to see which comes out first. The new Ridgeline or the Ford F150 aluminum truck.

  5. Breathing Borla says:

First thing they need to do if figure out a plan for the spare so if you get a flat, you don’t have to unload the entire load in the bed to get to the spare. Then get some guts and better MPG for the power-train.

last and certainly not least, don’t make it so damn ugly

  6. GoBig says:

To me the Ridgeline wasn’t after the truck market. I always figured it was for people who would buy a Subaru Brat, but preferred the Honda brand.

There have been plenty of strange car/truck combinations over the years. Don’t forget the Chevy El Camino, or Ford Ranchero.

It seems there will always be those who want a niche’ vehicle with a bed that isn’t a real truck.

  7. Rvinyl.com says:

I feel like Honda, along with Mazda, has lost its way. The Ridgeline was never a real truck and was never popular. Why throw more money after a segment you don’t do well in? Just keep making commuter sedans that last forever and you’ll be alright Honda.

the two genders. With the lifestyles that we lead these days, not only
the food we eat, but also the pollution we are surrounded by and our lack of exercise,
makes it necessary to do a regular detox to flush
out all those unwanted and dangerous toxins that build up in our bodies.
The HCG diet uses h – CG drops, combined with a very low calorie diet for weight loss.
