aFe Cold Air Intake

AFE air intake

We like aFe’s kit – it’s simple, reasonably priced (AutoAnything sells them for about $350), and the quality is good. Picking up 5-10 rear wheel horsepower is always good, not to mention this kit’s great sound and looks. Combine this intake with a nice exhaust system and you should see another 5 or so rear wheel hp.

When it comes to the Tundra 5.7, we recommend the aFe air intake over the Volant air intake for the following reasons: aFe’s kit doesn’t require you to use self-tapping screws to install the MAF sensor (which looks and feels cheap), and it fits correctly with the factory engine cover.

Both the aFe and Volant kits exhibited decent performance gains, and they both sounded great. Assuming you can get the two kits for about the same price (which is true at the time of this posting), the aFe kit makes more sense than the Volant. That’s not to take anything away from Volant – it’s just not quite as nice. Simple as that.

The AFE CAI was somewhat clumsy to put into the Tundra 5.7, there are a lot a little things they could have done to prep the items for ease of assembly.on the performance side there is a tremendous gain and very notable increase in throttle response and acceleration. the instructions that came with the CAI left very much to be desired and not very informative

Installed aFe P/N 51-81172 in my 2011 Tundra this weekend. (Pro Dry S filter). Not very good instructions but removal of OEM unit and install of the aFe was fairly straight forward. I won’t disagree that the instructions provided were fairly useless. Not sure if aFe fixed something over prior packaging or not but with the seal provided in my kit, the filter box sealed very tight to the fender well opening. Other reviews complained of a gap. Available on Amazon for $304, great deal and I’m very pleased I bought it. Amazon parts verification says doesn’t fit 2011 Tundra but it’s the same as 2010. I like the Pro Dry S over the filter that needs oiling (aFe p/N 54-81172), no warranty issues or concerns with damaging MAF sensor.

Just a little tip! It took me 4 hours to narrow down my problem. I installed the aFe stage 2 in my 2007 Tundra yesterday. After install it ran VERY rough! I tripled check for leaks….I made sure the Maf sensor was installed correctly and I even disconnected the battery on every step to fix….still no luck. So with nothing to lose…I removed the Maf sensor and took it inside and cleaned it out with a stop and rubbing alcohol. After I reinstalled the sensor…..Viola!! Works fine now! Very beefy sound on acceleration too! Love it.

I installed the Stage 2CX intake system with the Pro-Dry S filter on my truck a little over 3 years ago. Wow, what a system! I chose this specific model because I liked the beefy look of the open air filter over the boxed version and the filter is a breeze to clean.

Installation was a little difficult due to the pre-drilled slots in the shield not matching up to the pre-drilled Tundra holes. A few beers and a good neighbor makes things much easier.

I also coupled the system with an aFe throttle body spacer. Yes, I know it does little to nothing, but the hiss it makes when you push air through the intake is amazing. I like to think of it as my poor man’s turbo.

After 3 years, this system has been a beast. It really opened up my Tundra, which has a massively powerful engine to begin with. The difference between the stock rumble and the aFe rumble is tremendous. Your significant other will more than likely hate it.

The price is a little hefty, but spending $300 to be anxious to drive my truck everyday was well worth it in my opinion. It takes all the willpower I can muster to keep from mashing the gas all the time.

Bottom line, if you’re thinking of aFe, you don’t need to look at the competition.
